Kyiv Post: Ukraine defines a new border with separatist-controlled territories (MAP)
Ukraine's parliament granted a special status to some parts of Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast, and defined the new border of those territories in a Tuesday vote that followed complicated negotiations among coalition members and the president, who authored the bills.
A total of 265 Ukrainian lawmakers backed the decision to give a special status to the territories, but only after clean and transparent elections are held on those territories under Ukraine's law. Ukraine's Foreign Minister Pavlo Klimkin said in his twitter microblog that such a sequence was create to “prevent clever manipulations".
WNU Editor: The problem with this "new border" and who can (and who cannot) receive special status is that it does not include regions that have predominant Russian populations that are under Ukraine military control in the Donetsk and Luhansk Oblast .... but whose citizens have already expressed a strong desire to at least be given a chance to have the vote on "special status". I can understand why Kiev is reluctant to include these areas .... in the current environment they know that they would lose any fair vote, so the alternative is to ignore these populations .... and focus on the territories that they do not control. Unfortunately .... this is a prescription for disaster. Resentment is now very high in Ukraine controlled territories with predominantly Russian-Ukrainian populations .... this will only alienate them further and stoke the fires for more fighting. A low level insurgency is presently ongoing .... this will all but guarantee that it will not only continue, but probably also escalate. For me .... this is depressing. From my vantage point the opportunity to end this conflict has now presented itself .... let everyone in the Donetsk and Luhansk regions vote on this special status .... unfortunately .... Kiev .... afraid that they would lose such a vote .... has made the decision to make sure that it does not happen.
