The Military Operation To Retake Tikrit Has Resulted In 1,000 Iraqi MIlitiamen Their Lives

The State/McClatchy News: Operation to retake Tikrit stalled by heavy casualties, discord

ISTANBUL — The much ballyhooed Iraqi government operation to capture the central city of Tikrit from the Islamic State has stalled three weeks after it began, amid widespread reports that Shiite Muslim militias and the government are badly divided over tactics and roiled by claims that the militias have engaged in war crimes against the local Sunni Muslim population.

A two-day pause supposedly intended to give the Iraqi government time to bring up reinforcements has stretched into a week, as reports circulate that Iraqi government troops and the militias took heavier than anticipated casualties in their first efforts to dislodge Islamic State fighters. At least 1,000 militiamen died in the early days of fighting, according to some reports, roughly 5 percent of the 20,000 men the militias have committed to the operation.

WNU Editor: I believe these reports of high casualties are true. During the taping of this Al Jazeera report from the front lines , the Al Jazeera reporter saw 5 Iraqi special forces soldiers getting killed in a few minutes .... and that was in just one small skirmish. The battle for Tikrit has been ongoing for weeks now .... one can only imagine the casualty count .... and on both sides.

Update: If this report is true .... it appears that Iraqi Shiite militias are now getting frustrated in the battle for Tikrit .... Iraqi Sunnis accuse Shi'ite paramilitaries of burning homes outside Tikrit (Reuters)

Ukrainian Oligarchs Have Been The Biggest Donors To The Clinton's Foundation

Zero Hedge: Clinton Foundation’s Deep Financial Ties to Ukrainian Oligarch Revealed

Clinton Foundation’s Deep Financial Ties to Ukrainian Oligarch Who Pushed for Closer Ties to EU Revealed

Between 2009 and 2013, including when Mrs. Clinton was secretary of state, the Clinton Foundation received at least $8.6 million from the Victor Pinchuk Foundation, according to that foundation, which is based in Kiev, Ukraine. It was created by Mr. Pinchuk, whose fortune stems from a pipe-making company. He served two terms as an elected member of the Ukrainian Parliament and is a proponent of closer ties between Ukraine and the European Union.

In 2008, Mr. Pinchuk made a five-year, $29 million commitment to the Clinton Global Initiative, a wing of the foundation that coordinates charitable projects and funding for them but doesn’t handle the money. The pledge was to fund a program to train future Ukrainian leaders and professionals “to modernize Ukraine,” according to the Clinton Foundation. Several alumni are current members of the Ukrainian Parliament. Actual donations so far amount to only $1.8 million, a Pinchuk foundation spokesman said, citing the impact of the 2008 financial crisis.

FARC Threatens To End Its Ceasefire In Colombia

VOA/Reuters: FARC Threatens to End Its Truce in Colombia

HAVANA - Colombia's Marxist-led FARC guerrillas threatened Thursday to end a unilateral truce that has been in place since December unless the government of President Juan Manuel Santos called off military attacks on rebel positions.

The Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia called its truce at Christmastime, and Santos responded March 10 by announcing Colombia's armed forces would halt aerial bombing raids for one month, saying the reprieve could be extended if the FARC continued its cease-fire.

Yemen Is Now Part Of The Proxy War Between Iran And Saudi Arabia

Con Coughlin, The Telegraph: Yemen is a battlefield for Saudi Arabia and Iran

The latest atrocity in Yemen, which claimed nearly 150 lives on Friday, appears part of a proxy war between the Middle East's two superpowers

Of all the wars that have ravaged the Middle East since the outbreak of the so-called Arab Spring four years ago, the bitter rivalry between the more fanatical adherents of Sunni and Shia Islam has now emerged as the region’s defining conflict.

The deadly series of suicide bomb attacks in Yemen on Friday, which are reported to have claimed the lives of nearly 150 people, is just the latest brutal manifestation of the Sunni-Shia conflict which has resulted in rival forces inflicting widespread bloodshed throughout the Arab world.

Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Bahrain are among the many Middle Eastern states that have been badly affected by the deepening hostility between rival Sunni and Shia factions. And at the heart of a conflict which threatens to transform the political landscape of the modern Arab world lies the deadly rivalry between Saudi Arabia’s Sunni fundamentalist ruling family and Iran’s equally uncompromising Shia-based Islamic revolution.

WNU Editor: The Saudis see Iran arming the Houtis rebels who .... on the map .... are only 500 miles away from Mecca . In turn ... the Iranians see Saudi support for militants trying to overthrow Assad in Syria, as well as supporting anti-Shiite groups elsewhere .... Yemen included. For an outsider looking in .... there definitely is a proxy war happening right now .... and if current trends are any indication .... this is a proxy war that will continue to escalate and spread into our regions and conflicts.

Russia Delivers A Nuclear Threat To Denmark

IBTimes: Danish Warships Could Be Targeted By Russian Nuclear Missiles If Denmark Joins NATO Shield, Diplomat Says

Russia's ambassador to Denmark warned Saturday that Danish warships could become targets for Russian nuclear missiles if the country joins a U.S.-led NATO missile defense shield expansion. NATO has expanded the highly sophisticated, largely U.S.-funded system in Europe since 2002. But Russia has increasingly griped about the expansion since the start of the crisis in Ukraine, which has pushed East-West relations to their lowest point since the Cold War era.

WNU Editor: This announcement caught me off guard. A nuclear missile for a ship .... speaking of over-kill.

Russian Subs Near The Coast Of Britain?

A new Russian nuclear submarine, Yuri Dolgoruky, seen in the water area of the Sevmash factory in the northern city of Arkhangelsk, Russia

The Telegraph: Did Russian submarine nearly drag Scottish fishing trawler to watery grave?

A fishing crew have claimed their boat was nearly dragged underwater by a submarine - but there were no British vessels in the area

A trawler captain has claimed his boat was nearly dragged to a watery grave by a rogue Russian submarine while fishing off the Scottish coast.

Angus Macleod said he and his four crew were "extremely lucky" after his net became snagged on a mystery submerged object, which almost pulled the boat and crew under the waves.

The Royal Navy has said there were no British or Nato submarines in the area at the time. In recent months it has been alleged that Russian submarines have been operating in British waters.

Mr MacLeod and his crew were fishing aboard the 41-year-old wooden Aquarius about ten miles east of the Butt of Lewis in 360 feet of water on Tuesday.

WNU Editor: A friend of mine who enjoys sailing off the Florida coast had a similar experience a few years ago (he was not fishing). He a few others were in their sailboat when all of a sudden they sense/felt something very big underneath them and moving very fast .... and when they looked over the side all that they saw was a large dark shadow that quickly disappeared. Just thinking about it gives me the chills.

The U.S. Marines Are Looking For 'A Few Good Women'

CBS 60 Minutes: A Few Good Women

The Marines are looking for a few good women to serve in combat but, after more than two years of trying, no woman has made it through the grueling infantry officer school

Remember that old recruiting ad the Marines are "...looking for a few good men?" Well, now they're looking for a few good women as well. The Armed Services have been ordered to open all their ground combat units to women by the end of this year - or else give the secretary of defense a good reason why not.

For the Marines that means accepting female volunteers into their Infantry Officer School to see if they can make it through the grueling three-month course. You would expect the training to be tough, but we had no idea how tough until we saw it. The Marines have kept most of what happens in that course secret so anyone going through it doesn't know what to expect. But they opened it up for us so you could see what it takes to become a Marine infantry officer - male or female it doesn't matter because the demands are the same. Can women do it? Take a look and judge for yourself.

WNU Editor: The clip for this story starts at the 15:52 mark. The story is interesting, but this report also gives a eye-opening look at the Marines "combat endurance test" .... wow .... I knew it was tough .... but not that tough .... and the 25ft rope climb .... ouch!!!!
