Turkey Launches Military Operation Into Syria

Reuters: Turkish military enters Syria to evacuate soldiers from tomb: sources

(Reuters) - The Turkish military launched an operation into Syria overnight to evacuate Turkish soldiers guarding the tomb of Suleyman Shah, grandfather of the founder of the Ottoman Empire, two senior Turkish officials told Reuters on Sunday.

The mission was successfully completed, with the troops brought back to Turkey, but one soldier was killed in an accident during the operation, one of the officials said.

The Turkish government said late last year that Islamic State militants were advancing on the mausoleum, which is guarded by several dozen Turkish soldiers.

Ukraine Military: Pro-Russian Fighters Are Preparing To Launch A Military Assault On The City Of Mariupol

Reuters: Pro-Russia rebel build-up near port city alarms Ukraine military

(Reuters) - Pro-Russian separatists are building up forces and weapons in Ukraine's south east and the Ukrainian military said on Saturday it was braced for the possibility of a rebel attack on the port city of Mariupol.

The Kiev military accused Russia on Friday of sending more tanks and troops towards the rebel-held town of Novoazovsk, further east along the Sea of Azov coast from Mariupol, expanding their presence on what it fears could be the next battlefront.

A rebel attack on Mariupol, a city of half a million people and potentially a gateway to Crimea, which Russia annexed last March, would almost certainly kill off a European-brokered ceasefire.

WNU Editor: Both sides are violating the ceasefire all along the front .... but if a major ground assault is launched on the city of Mariupol .... the ceasefire would definitely be dead.

Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich Talks About Returning To Ukraine

Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich makes a statement during a news conference in the southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don, March 11, 2014. redit: Reuters/Maxim Shemetov

Reuters: A year after fleeing Ukraine, Yanukovich speaks of return

(Reuters) - Ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich, who fled to Russia a year ago after being toppled by months of street protests, said he was ready to return to Ukraine if the opportunity arose.

The pro-Russian leader was overthrown by the "Maidan" uprising in Kiev against his decision to back away from a deal that would have taken the country towards integration with Europe and instead tighten economic ties with Russia, Ukraine's old Soviet master.

Just weeks after his departure, Moscow annexed the Crimea peninsula, a base for Russia's Black Sea fleet, and pro-Russian separatists seized key buildings in the east of the country leading to a conflict in which more than 5,000 people have been killed.

WNU Editor: My advice to former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich is simple .... never go back to Ukraine. Ousted Ukrainian President Yanukovich was just one of a long string of corrupt and incompetent Ukrainian leaders who did everything in their power to make a complete mess of the country .... and in his case he did succeed spectacularly. But as bad as former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich is .... when compared to the current crop of leaders in Kiev .... you have to wonder if maybe he was the lesser of all evils.

Ukraine's Deputy Foreign Minister: Ukraine Preparing For 'Full-Scale War' Against Russia

CBC: Ukraine preparing for 'full-scale war,' says former envoy to Canada

Vadym Prystaiko, now deputy foreign minister, calls on the West to 'stiffen up in the spine'

Ukraine's deputy foreign minister says he is preparing for "full-scale war" against Russia and wants Canada to help by supplying lethal weapons and the training to use them.

Vadym Prystaiko, who until last fall was Ukraine's ambassador to Canada, says the world must not be afraid of joining Ukraine in the fight against a nuclear power.

WNU Editor: He is trying to make the case for Canada to send troops to fight in eastern Ukraine .... I have been a Canadian citizen for 20 years, and hearing that type of talk just makes me shudder. If Vadym Prystaiko is that eager for war .... my suggestion to him is that he put on a uniform, pick up a gun, and go to the front himself.

Who Spilled The Battle Plans For This Spring's Offensive Against The Islamic State?

New York Times: Disclosures of Battle Plan by Pentagon Startle Many

WASHINGTON — The Obama administration has been eager to show momentum against the Islamic State after a conference last week dramatized the hurdles to countering the terrorist group’s propaganda. But the Pentagon may have gone too far in sharing its military planning.

On Thursday, a senior official from the American military’s Central Command told reporters that Iraqi and Kurdish forces, with help from the United States, were preparing to launch an assault to retake the Iraqi city of Mosul in April or May, before the searing heat of the Iraqi summer. The assault force, the official said, would consist of up to 25,000 Iraqi and Kurdish troops.

WNU Editor: The bizarreness of this is even more compounded by the Pentagon admitting publicly that they do not have confidence in the strategy of their war plan .... Exclusive: Pentagon Doubts Its Own ISIS War Plan (Nancy A. Youssef, Daily Beast).

Update: The new U.S. Secretary of Defense is trying to put some order ton this chaos .... New US Secretary of Defense silent on date of Mosul offensive, says US will take supporting role (Jerusalem Post).
