Guardian: Ukraine truce rocked by Kharkiv blast

Two people killed including a police officer in explosion in Ukraine’s second-largest city as violations of ceasefire continue

Two people were killed and about a dozen injured when a bomb exploded in Ukraine’s second-largest city at a march on to mark the first anniversary of the ousting of president Viktor Yanukovych, the country’s interior ministry said.

The ministry said Sunday’s blast in the government-held eastern city of Kharkiv was due to an “unknown explosive device” and was being considered a terrorist act. A police officer was one of the dead, it said.

WNU Editor: This is my worst nightmare coming true. My aunt lives in Kharkiv .... and I am very familiar with the city. In the past year the city has become deeply polarized along ethnic lines .... Russians make up the majority within the city .... Ukrainians outside the city. Within the Kharkiv Oblast itself .... Ukrainians have a majority ... but with refugees from the eastern part of the country continuing to flood into the city ... these numbers are now distorted.. What keeps the peace is a very heavy security presence .... Ukrainian military units and militias from the east are everywhere .... as well as Ukraine's SBU security service. With the exception of my aunt and her husband .... my cousins and their families left the city last year ... citing the security situation and the deteriorating economic situation. And while I do not expect this part of Ukraine to explode into war .... I do foresee tensions and random acts of terrorism becoming the norm rather than the exception.
