Wall Street Journal: U.S. Air Force Veteran Charged With Attempting to Support Islamic State
A U.S. Air Force veteran has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Brooklyn on charges of attempting to support Islamic State, the latest in a string of cases involving American recruits to the militant group.
Officials have accused Tairod Nathan Webster Pugh, a 47-year-old U.S. citizen living in New Jersey, of traveling to Turkey in an attempt to cross the border to Syria and fight violent jihad for Islamic State, also known as ISIS. Mr. Pugh allegedly flew to Turkey from Egypt, but Turkish authorities denied his entry and sent him back to Egypt, where he was then deported to the U.S.
During his detainment in Egypt, Mr. Pugh told authorities that he was traveling to Turkey to look for a job and denied any desire to travel to Syria, according to a criminal complaint filed under seal against him in January. A federal grand jury returned an indictment against him this week.
