Islamic State Advance on Kobani Halted as Peshmerga Join Fight -- Bloomberg
Kurds have repelled advances made by Islamic State militants in the besieged Syrian border town of Kobani, days after Iraqi Kurdish fighters joined the battle, a senior official said.
The arrival of about 150 Iraqi Kurdish fighters known as Peshmerga, armed with heavy weapons, helped halt the advance of Islamic State fighters, said Ibrahim Kurdu, a senior Kurdish official.
The al-Qaeda breakaway group has been attacking the town near the Turkish border for more than six weeks, seeking to expand the caliphate it has declared in Iraq and Syria. Its capture would open a direct route to Aleppo, the largest city in north Syria, which is also under attack by the group.
